Carretera a Puerto Angelito (Puerto Escondido)

This painting presents a empty landscape in Puerto Escondido, Mexico—a scene that captures the aftermath of a social gathering where only a bottle remains. This melancholy work is, in and of itself, a simulacrum, inspired by a series of pictures I took while traveling around Oaxaca that captured desolate moments through a hazy phone lens. Using layered treatments of paint that replicate a Gaussian blur, I abstracted my own representation of sight, conveying the ephemeral quality of memory and the unreliable filter of the subconscious. This distance from the original lived event highlights my personal experience of migration, as well as my longing for a connection to place and the true meaning of home.
