Oasis In Time
I delve into the concept of duality in my painting Oasis In Time, portraying an oasis in both literal and symbolic forms. Set in the heart of the Yakima Valley Desert, the location is a true sanctuary, mirrored by the group of women who form a "oasis in time." Each year, we gather at this stretch of land for a ceremony to celebrate life, share joys, and mourn losses. More than just a tradition, this gathering functions as a dream circle where we recharge our creative energy through riding the river, making art, preparing shared meals, and exchanging wisdom. Continuing a recurring theme in my work, this painting—which draws from a 2023 phone photo—captures my physical distance from the event's origin through a blurred, Gaussian-like technique, emphasizing my personal experience of migration and my longing for a connection to place and the meaning of home.
